When I stayed on a train to go to London from Manchester, I listened to a podcast from Serdar Kuzuloglu’s Guide to Life Beyond “ Haddini Aşan Yaşam Rehberi “. Its limits. The main theme of the podcast is today’s desire to read books. Considering that so many books are produced annually, we need to be selective when choosing the right book. In this article, I would like to touch on the issue of Reading Books by giving references from the valuable Serdar Kuzuloglu’s podcast, Reading a Book, and conveying my own observations.
First of all, during my travels in Manchester and London, I noticed that people read books on public transport. Reading a book is not a concept we can enjoy or romanticize as some of us think; it is a tool of life that we can take in our spare time and add different perspectives to ourselves. We all spend different amounts of time traveling by tube from Picadilly to the Airport, from King’s Cross Street to Leicester Square. We can spend this time reading books, watching reel videos on our phones, or reading online books on our phones. But there is an important question: What is the value of time for us now?
If we examine this issue in detail, plane, train, and bus travel are important anecdotes for me. Especially during the 1-2 minute period at the moment of landing, everyone tries to get ahead and even ignores each other to run to the doors. Even though I don’t usually talk big, the situation is different. I consider losing 1-2 minutes. I understand these people, those who have to go to work during the week, those who need to go somewhere for an emergency, but are our reactions really to be superior to someone or to realize our feelings? This is also an important issue.
Another important podcast topic is Albert Schopenhauer’s thoughts about reading books. If I remember correctly, they said reading a book is like imposing other thoughts on oneself. If we limit this and give our minds a break, we can get the maximum benefit from reading books. It is not possible to disagree with this idea to a certain extent, but nowadays, when reading books, we only focus on books. If we can get the information we will discover about ourselves from YouTube or other media, we can also benefit from this.
In conclusion, Serdar Kuzuloglu mentioned the importance of reading books as we can focus on a single point. Perhaps reading more books will cause us to focus more, and focusing more will cause us to produce more. Theoretically, reading a book, which exposes us to the thoughts of others, may cause us to focus more as we are exposed to fewer distractions while using the phone or in other moments. Nowadays, we also receive information in books through podcasts or e-books, but the question we need to ask is how we handle our purpose of reading.
